Daniel Hutchins Composer

biography

Daniel Hutchins is a 19 year old composer currently studying at the Royal College of Music under the guidance of Dr Edwin Hillier. Before beginning his studies, Daniel was a music scholar at Bedford School, and sang with their chapel choir for 5 years playing an influential role in shaping his musical upbringing. Daniel is also influenced by the sound-world of the brass band, where Daniel has been playing cornet since the age of 7 and makes frequent appearances with championship section brass bands up and down the country. Recently, Daniel composed and then conducted a string trio of his at the Natural History Museum and at the Royal College of Music, as part of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2024 exhibition. Daniel is now working closely with The Pax Quartet with exciting performances scheduled for their 2025 season.

Daniel has just begun his undergraduate studies at the Royal College of Music, as a principal study composer. He is currently being taught by world-renowned composer Dr Edwin Hillier. Prior to joining the Royal College of Music, Daniel studied with Dr Richard Bullen.

MUSICIAN-IN-RESIDENCE, SWANBOURNE HOUSE SCHOOL

Daniel worked as 'Musician-In-Residence' as part of his gap year, between finishing his A-Levels and starting his studies. He gained invaluable teaching experience, where he found himself teaching and taking a lead in the listening aspect of the curriculum. Daniel also worked on the school's junior and senior school productions (Frozen and The Sound of Music respectively).

MUSIC SCHOLAR, BEDFORD SCHOOL

Daniel spent 5 years studying at Bedford school, where he had gained a place as a music scholar. During his time there, Daniel first took interest in composition and studied under the guidance of Dr Emma-Ruth Richards. He was exposed to a wide variety of music through the school's chapel choir, where he sang as a counter-tenor, and would perform in services on a weekly basis. He took the position of principal trumpet in the school's Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, Brass Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra. He was the President of the Adrian Boult Society, the school's academic music society which hosts talks and lectures on all things music.
